Soon after the release of their seventh album All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us in 2016, guitarist and principal songwriter Tom Searle died after three years of living with skin cancer. In September 2017, the band released the single "Doomsday"–the last song he was working on before his death–and announced Middleton as their new lead guitarist.

Tracks A1 - A7 were recorded on November 2nd, 1996 at Raw Recordings, in Mahopac, New York on 24 tracks in about 9 hours.
Tracks A8 - B10 were recorded on 16 tracks during the middle of a blizzard on February 16th - 18th, 1996 at Sweetwood Sound in Parsippany, New Jersey, for the "Better Off Dead" EP.
