John Barleycorn Must Die is the fourth studio album by English rock band Traffic, released in 1970 as Island ILPS 9116 in the United Kingdom, United Artists UAS 5504 in the United States, and as Polydor 2334 013 in Canada. It marked the band's comeback after a brief disbandment, and peaked at number 5 on the Billboard 200, making it their highest charting album in the US, and has been certified a gold record by the RIAA

At only 22 years old, Steve Winwood sat down in early 1970 to fulfill a contractual commitment by making his first solo album, on which he intended to play all the instruments himself

John Barleycorn Must Die was the fourth album by Traffic. is in fact simply is not a good songwriter. Dave Mason was finally out of the fold for good, after having rejoined the group to help them after they struggled during the recording of their self-titled second album.

So this album turned into a Traffic album, instead of just a Winwood solo album. I put the genre of this album as rock, but it is much more than that. Some songs are jazz-rock like the first song, while others like the title track are folk-oriented. Traffic fused a bunch of different musical styles together and I didn't know what genre to pick so I just went with rock. The band: Steve Winwoo- Lead vocals, keyboards, guitars, bass Jim Capaldi- Vocals, drums and ercussion Chris Wood- Flute, saxaphone, and organ. John Barleycorn- This is a cover of an old English folk song. The earliest records of the song date back to the 1500's. I love the acoustic riff on this song.

This recording is not from Hammersmith Odeon - Traffic don't appear to have played there in June 1970. It seems more likely to be a BBC Radio 1 concert from 30 April 1970. Exceptions to this are tracks 6 and 7 which are, respectively, the version of Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory from the official live album On The Road and an edit of the version of The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys from the same album. Ignoring those two tracks, the quality is quite decent for a bootleg (it's a professional recording) apart from the fact that it has clearly been dubbed from an LP (BBC transcription?) with quite a lot of clicks and pops.
