Recording began during the North American leg of the Humanz Tour in late 2017. According to Gorillaz co-creator, Damon Albarn, the album was recorded quickly so that the band would have more material to play at future concerts

Now, don’t get me wrong here - I’ve been a huge Gorillaz fan since the project’s inception and have followed it eagerly since, but this album is just disappointing. The album overall, from the imagery to the music itself, has a very strong hipster vibe. It’s aiming for a more 80s electronic sound (sorry, I mean aesthetic ), which of course isn’t a bad thing in itself, it just smacks of trying to sound ‘cool’ instead of just actually being cool. Gorillaz are clearly one of those artists where each album they release is never able to match the previous one. As much as I hate to be ‘that guy’ who says But it’s not as good as their early stuff, it’s true. In recent years, Damon Albarn has seemed to value quantity over quality, releasing ‘Humanz’ and ‘The Now Now’ in consecutive years (and this has been marketed as a major album, as opposed to a ‘G-Sides’ or ‘The Fall’ style stop-gap).

The album was first teased through a series of posters found at All Points East festival, and was officially announced two days later.

For one, The Now Now is probably Gorillaz’s most dance-able album, as some songs are focused almost entirely around a beat. In fact, in some ways, the stripped back style and focus on rhythm really works - it comes off as an interesting experiment in dialing things down to get to the bare musical essentials. But despite these tracks having some awesome elements, overall the main thing that stands out about The Now Now is its sameness. There’s no bad tracks, and the album as a whole has good ideas, but it does nothing with them. It almost feels unfinished.

Damon Albarn trims down the guest list and focuses his songwriting on the band’s most coherent LP to date. But that’s also been its flaw: While last year’s Humanz brought some fire (notably the Pusha T- Mavis Staples collab Let Me Out ), it felt more like a streaming algorithm than a coherent album.
