Mellow Gold is the third studio album by American musician Beck, released on March 1, 1994 by DGC Records. Critics noted the album's hybrid of various styles including rock, hip hop, folk, blues, psychedelia, and country, as well as ironic, witty lyrics. Its decidedly anti-commercial attitude led to it becoming an unexpected commercial success, peaking at number thirteen in the United States and eventually being certified platinum

At various points over the past 25 years, Beck has taken a hiatus from his artsy, eccentric persona and entered a reflective, melancholy mode. At such moments he has written some of his most poignant and beautiful songs. Instead of tapping into technology or using irony as in instrument, he has delivered poetic ruminations about love and loss through acoustic-based numbers teeming with longing and quiet despair. Paradoxically, on March 1, exactly 20 years will have passed since Beck released his first major-label album, "Mellow Gold. The songs were quirky pastiches of sometimes incongruous styles - rock, rap, anti-folk, psychedelia, and country - that stuck together like metal objects attracted to a powerful magnet. The standout single, "Loser," made Beck both an unlikely star and an inaccurate and unwilling representative of slacker culture.

The album would yield three Top 40 singles - as many as Nirvana would have over an entire career - and the biggest hit, "Comedown," plays in the 2010 video of Miley Cyrus smoking salvia. Emerging from the alt-rock desert of Fort Worth, Texas, the Toadies scored a gold record via some weirdo Southern gothic doom-choogle that existed somewhere between Kiss, the Blasters, ZZ Top and the Pixies. Not really punk, not really pop, not really metal, their hit, "Possum Kingdom" rode an errant bar of 2/4 years before "Hey Ya" - but with lyrics about a lake murder. Recorded on an 8-track, Mellow Gold was an ambitious genre pastiche of coffeehouse strum, blasts of Melvins feedback, screwed ballads, sludge-punk and offbeat raps for a generation that grew up with hip-hop as their folk music. Mellow Yellow is the fourth album from British singer-songwriter Donovan. It was released in the US in March 1967 (Epic Records LN 24239 (monaural), BN 26239 (rechanneled stereo), but not released in the UK because of a continuing contractual dispute that also prevented Sunshine Superman from a UK release. In June 1967, a cross-section of both albums was released as Sunshine Superman (Pye Records NPL 18181) in the UK. "Mellow Yellow" was the name of Donovan's hit single released the previous November.
