Radio City is the second album by the American rock group Big Star. Released in 1974, Radio City was recorded during 1973 at Memphis' Ardent Studios. Though not a commercial success at the time, it is now recognized as a milestone album in the history of power pop music. Critically acclaimed upon its release, the record sold poorly, partly due to a lack of promotion and the distribution problems of the band's struggling record label, Ardent Records

Record is the debut album by the American rock band Big Star. It was released in August 1972 by Memphis-based Ardent Records. Many critics praised the album's elegant vocal harmonies and refined songcraft but Record suffered from poor distribution and sold fewer than 10,000 copies upon its initial release. However, Record gained wider attention in the late '70s in the UK when EMI reissued it with Radio City as a double LP package due to increasing demand.

So Radio City is a very different record. The transition between Record closer "ST 100/6" and Radio City opener "O My Soul" was always jarring, but it's made worse by the addition of the single mix of "In the Street", which was originally the B-side to "When My Baby's Beside Me". Like the shortened mix of "O My Soul" that ends the new set, it's more interesting historically than musically. In fact, Radio City is simultaneously a grab for airplay and sales and the beginning of Chilton's musical entrenchment that would continue through Third/Sisters Lovers (a Big Star album in name only) and into his solo career. More than that, it is the adult counterpart to its adolescent predecessor, forgoing the debut's single-minded intensity for a more nuanced mix of emotions ranging from jaded ("You Get What You Deserve") to resigned ("Back of a Car") to sentimental ("I'm in Love with a Girl").

It's ironic that Cheap Trick's cover of Big Star's "In The Street" became the theme song fo. .Fortunately, Concord has unearthed its 1992 reissue of Big Star’s first two albums, tacking on alternate mixes of two songs (one of which features-yes-more cowbell). To listeners raised on similar strains of guitar pop, from Teenage Fanclub to The Long Winters, the sound won’t be revolutionary but the crystalline mixes, pristine guitars timeless songs like September Gurls and When My Baby’s Beside Me still evoke boundless admiration. Those who want a more comprehensive take, though, would do better to wait for Rhino’s exhaustive box set, due out this fall.
