Aoxomoxoa ‎(LP, Album). The group had already initiated recording sessions for the album when Ampex manufactured and released the first 16-track multitrack recording machine. It offered 16 discrete tracks for recording and playback (model number MM-1000). As a direct consequence, the band spent eight months, off-and-on, in the studio not only recording the album but getting used to-and experimenting with-the new technology.

Aoxomoxoa is a 1969 album by the Grateful Dead. One of the first rock albums to be recorded using 16-track technology, fans and critics alike consider this era to be the band's experimental apex. The title is a meaningless palindrome, usually pronounced "ox-oh-mox-oh-ah". The album was certified gold by the RIAA on May 13, 1997

Originally named The Warlocks, The Grateful Dead made their performance debut in July of 1965 and quickly went on to become the best known and most influential of San Francisco's psychedelic rock pioneers. The group initially consisted of Jerry Garcia (guitar), Bob Weir (guitar), Phil Lesh (bass), Ron "Pigpen" McKernan (keyboards), and Bill Kreutzmann (drums). In 1968 they added percussionist Mickey Hart and keyboardist Tom Constanten to the line-up.

In 1969, for their third album, the Grateful Dead eschewed outside producers and created Aoxomoxoa themselves, beginning a run of self-produced albums that would continue until 1977. Scrapping the first sessions, which were recorded to eight-track tape, the Dead now had 16 tracks with which to experiment their psychedelic sound, with an album that included entirely Robert Hunter-penned lyrics for the first time. The name of this album would be the odd and hard to pronounce title Aoxomoxoa. During the recording and release of Aoxomoxoa, The Grateful Dead were having problems, and were going through permanent and temporary changes. Ron "Pigpen" McKernan was dealing with an alchohol addiction, which would help finish him off in 1973. He was also losing massive amounts of weight, and gaining a very ill image

The Grateful Dead is the debut album of the Grateful Dead. It was released by Warner Bros. Records in March 1967. According to the biographies of both bassist Phil Lesh and drummer Bill Kreutzmann, the band released the album as San Francisco's Grateful Dead. The album was primarily recorded at RCA's Studio A, in Los Angeles, in only four days. The band had wanted to record the tracks in their hometown of San Francisco, but no recording studios in the area had modernized equipment at the time
