Preoccupations is the second studio album by Canadian rock band Preoccupations, released on September 16, 2016, by Flemish Eye in Canada and Jagjaguwar in the United States. It was the band's first album released under this name, after changing it from "Viet Cong" in 2015. The album was preceded by the singles "Anxiety", "Degraded" and "Memory".

Produced by Matt Flegel & Scott Munro. During an interview with CoS, Scott Munro recalls that Espionage is the first song Preoccupations wrote. He went on to say that it was recorded in multiple places. All the drums in the intro of the song were recorded in one take and were processed the Christ out of.

The band’s second LP (and first under the Preoccupations name) is a unique mix of the anxious and atmospheric, where tense, almost dreadful moods ( Anxiety, Sense ) sit side by side with shimmering ballads that bring to mind goth-adjacent bands like Echo & The Bunnymen ( Monotony, Memory ). It’s a darker, more romantic sound than Viet Cong, but just as sharp.

Preoccupations walk a high wire. On the one hand, the Canadian post-punk quartet, who originally took their name from the brutal insurgent group the Viet Cong and only changed it three years into their career after extended protests, tend to come off casually apolitical. We’re just playing music, frontman Matt Flegel said regarding the name’s backlash in a 2016 interview. That paradox has lent them an aura of poisoned irony, an air they manage to shake off, somewhat, with their third album, New Material. In a statement, Flegel called the LP an ode depression and self-sabotage, and looking inward at yourself with extreme hatred.

Preoccupations is focused on songcraft. The freewheeling, spiky abstractions peppered throughout the band’s earlier work as Viet Cong and Women are all but absent.
