Women is the eponymous debut album by Calgary band Women, recorded by fellow Calgary-native Chad VanGaalen. It was released in 2008 on VanGaalen's Flemish Eye record label in Canada, and on Jagjaguwar in the US. The song "Sag Harbor Bridge" is a direct reference to the suicide of the artist Ray Johnson, like "Locust Valley" and "Venice Lockjaw" on Women's second album of 2010, Public Strain.

Public Strain is a more subdued record. Album opener, "Can't You See", drifts gradually into form- the bass anchoring Patrick Flegel's vocal amid a haze of bowed guitars and abstract sampler-squeals. Narrow With the Hall" pits ghostly vocals against a sea of feedback, bound together only by a couple of wiry, tremolo-riddled chords. The atmosphere owes a distinct debt to the noisier side of 1980s underground music- particularly Sonic Youth's darker, skuzzier early days. Public Strain was recorded alongside producer Chad VanGaalen, who also helmed Women's self-titled record. His production is chilly and thin- possibly a nod to the early-80s indie bands that Women hold in high regard. Or maybe it was just the weather-the sessions were conducted in Alberta, Canada during the dead of winter. At first listen, Public Strain is impenetrably cold.

What a great album this is. So sad their guitarist passed away. I would love to hear some more music from Women one day. Reply See 1 reply Notify me Helpful. Delirious & perfect. Reply Notify me Helpful.

Public Strain has the feel of a garage record coupled with the songwriting of a smart indie record, though it struggles to avoid classification as the latter. Rather, Public Strain tears down its trappings from the inside, sending up the retro-grade 60s pop cliché via the snarky, punk dejectedness of brothers Matthew and Patrick Flegel, but it also builds those trappings anew, recasting the fuzzy indie pop album as a vehicle for more than imagined nostalgia. It carries a burdening but unarticulated weight, recalling the Sonic Youth aesthetic if Sonic Youth kept their lyrics obscured instead. It’s telling that Women would devolve into an onstage fistfight while touring for this record; Public Strain sounds like an album whose recording would fry the patience and relationships of its creators. It sort of has that canonical feel.

Listen free to Women – Public Strain (Can't You See, Heat Distraction and more). On their debut self-titled album, Women embraced sonic brashness that deeper examination revealed to be tinted with sly pop melody. With Public Strain the band honed a sound truthful to that reverb drenched noise while allowing the pop sensibilities to surface into clearer focus. From the opening strains of "Can't You See" it's clear that the album is far more than just a continuation of their debut.

Best song ever? Helen Fordsdale Best album ever? This. if you like this you should totally listen to faux fur, they only have one album but it might as well be a lost women album.

I’ve owned Women’s second album for a couple of months now, and while I’ve listen to Public Strain all the way through on a more than purely professional number of occasions, I’m going to have to be honest and say that closing song ‘Eyesore’ has completely distracted me. Good old last. It’s a song that has so mercilessly, ungratefully, dare I say cuntishly colonised my day-to-day thoughts that it’s pretty comprehensively thrown off my entire.

Public Strain is the second and final album by Calgary band Women. This record was produced by Chad VanGaalen. It was released in 2010 on VanGaalen's Flemish Eye record label in Canada, and on Jagjaguwar in the US. Two songs on the album are direct references to artist Ray Johnson. Locust Valley is the town where Johnson lived in New York State. Venice Lockjaw is a phrase Johnson incorporated in pins that he gave away at the Venice Biennale.
