Susan Cunningham attends university with Ken Barlow and becomes his first girlfriend. She appears in the very first episode of Coronation Street and makes her last appearance in early 1961. Susan Cunningham was a contemporary of Ken Barlow at Manchester University who unwittingly caused trouble at home for Ken. Ken arranged to meet her for drinks at the Imperial Hotel, where his mother was employed as a kitchen hand. When Ken didn't show, Susan drove to Coronation Street to see if he was alright. Ken's university education had turned him into "a proper stuck-up little snob", as Albert Tatlock put it - "snooty" was the simple way in which Ken's father, Frank, defined Ken's change in attitude. Thus, Ken gradually became embarrassed about his surroundings; his contemporaries lived in more affluent areas and he was put out when Susan arrived at N., the family home.

The date of her marriage to William Henry Barlow (Barlar) is estimated to have been between 1850-1853. Federal Census for Giles County, Tennessee, Susan was living in Bodenham, T. with her husband and four children. 1777-1841 Susan Frances Phillips Ancestry by Claude Waldrop Jr. (Unconfirmed). 1814-1815: Records Mentioning Phillips (and/or) Philips in Giles County, TN. 1835: Phillips Revolutionary War Pensioners. Census Report - Giles County, TN (Barlar, Phillips). Census Report - Giles County, TN - Bodenham District (Barlar, Phillips).
