Miles Ahead is an album by Miles Davis that was released in October 1957 by Columbia Records. It was Davis' first collaboration with arranger Gil Evans following the Birth of the Cool sessions. Along with their subsequent collaborations Porgy and Bess (1959) and Sketches of Spain (1960), Miles Ahead is one of the most famous recordings of Third Stream, a fusion of jazz, European classical, and world musics. Davis played flugelhorn throughout.

On the album, Miles is joined by Kai Winding, Junior Collins, Bill Barber, Lee Konitz, Gerry Mulligan, Al Haig, Joe Shulman and Max Roach. That being said, I believe Miles and all his contemporaries "Chased the Voodoo Down" during this era, before they plugged in their amps and did so much heroine that they sought of got off the rails. That is an opinion, not a fact. I believe that louder is not better, and these guys could get your foot and your mind tapping without volume or drugs. I bought this album after hearing about it from a Miles Davis-Tribute band. Stunning musicality by Miles, Gerry Mulligan, and others in the group.

Grammy Award winner Miles Davis was a major force in the jazz world, as both a trumpet player and a bandleader. Who Was Miles Davis? Instrumental in the development of jazz, Miles Davis is considered one of the top musicians of his era. Born in Illinois in 1926, he traveled at age 18 to New York City to pursue music. They were later released as part of the album Birth of the Cool. In the early 1950s, Davis became addicted to heroin. While he was still able to record, it was a difficult period for the musician and his performances were haphazard. The various members of his band went on to become some of the most influential musicians of the jazz fusion era. These included Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul (Weather Report), Chick Corea (Return to Forever), and John McLaughlin and Billy Cobham (Mahavishnu Orchestra).

Davis' first records released under his own name were recorded with Parker's band, in 1947, and were more arranged and rehearsed than Parker's usual approach to recording. known for its impressionistic style, innovative use of instrumentation, such as the use of tuba and French horn, and a non-vibrato playing style, hallmarks that the Miles Davis Nonet adopted for The Birth of the Cool.
