Birth of the Cool was music that focused on arrangements - the Miles Davis Nonet began as an arranger’s band. Even though different composers and arrangers created the music (Gil Evans, Gerry Mulligan, John Lewis, John Carisi), Birth of the Cool has a remarkably consistent sound. It’s about a collective, not an individual. Seventy years later, why is this music still so relevant and revered? As Kahn writes in his essay, the Birth of the Cool story is about bold beginnings and debuts. Birth of the Cool was a proving ground of instrumental talent and of approaches.
Cool & Cocky Freedom Imagination Relaxation Reminiscing Summer Sunday Afternoon. The Complete Birth of the Cool. The first contains all 12 tracks Davis cut in the studio in January 1949 with Gil Evans. The second contains three radio broadcasts that the Birth of the Cool nonet performed in September 1948 at the Royal Roost in New York City. All the recordings have been completely remastered, resulting in the best ever sound for these recordings. The set also features brand new liner notes from Phil Schapp, plus the original liners. All the added features help make The Complete Birth of the Cool the definitive chronicle of one of the most important eras in jazz history.
The Miles Davis recording appeared in the Ken Burns jazz documentary for PBS entitled Jazz in 2002. Moon Dreams" was recorded by Glenn Miller and the Army Air Force Band on January 21, 1944 and was released as a V-Disc, No. 201A, in October, 1944, featuring Sgt. Johnny Desmond and The Crew Chiefs on vocals. Glenn Miller also recorded the song on February 26, 1944 for the I Sustain the Wings radio program and on May 5, 1944 for the Office of War Information (OWI). Miles Davis first performed the song in 1948 in concert in New York, a performance which appears on The Complete Birth of the Cool sessions collection

The Miles Davis Nonet didn't last two years and released only four 78s during their lifetime, but these tracks not only mark a vital shift in jazz history, they're some of the most gorgeous arrangements ever put to tape. The deceptively casual "Boplicity" and celestial, shiveringly beautiful "Moon Dreams" still sound startlingly modern decades later. The Complete Birth of the Cool Miles.
Miles Davis’ 1957 album Birth of the Cool is a modern jazz classic, a snapshot of the post-bebop direction that the young trumpeter was beginning to pursue at the ripe age of 22. It was recorded with the Miles Davis Nonet, a rotating cast of musicians that included Max Roach, Lee Konitz, Joe Shulman, and Gerry Mulligan, among others. Now, Blue Note/UMe have announced The Complete Birth of the Cool, a new compilation that brings together every studio and live recording of the Nonet between 1949 and 1950
