Blue Note’s very first press release stated. Blue Note Records are designed simply to serve the uncompromising expressions of hot jazz or swing, in general. Any particular style of playing which represents an authentic way of musical feeling is genuine expression. By virtue of its significance in place, time and circumstance, it possesses its own tradition, artistic standards and audience that keep it alive.

Blue Note missed out on early Bebop (there is no Charlie Parker on the label) but caught up by recording all the early masterpieces by the magnificently idiosyncratic pianist/composer Thelonious Monk, starting in 1947. This is the only album that Coltrane made for Blue Note as leader. By general acclaim, however, it is rated as the best of his early recordings, and among the finest of his career. 4 Art Blakey: Moanin’ (1958). The drummer Art Blakey was one of Blue Note’s staple figures. Selecting one from the stack of albums Blakey made for Blue Note with his Jazz Messengers is tricky. This album has a hit in the title track by Bobby Timmons. Long, tall Dexter was one of Blue Note’s most notable rediscoveries. After he had spent much of the Fifties in jail for narcotics offences, his splendid series of Blue Notes relaunched his career. This was his own favourite. 7 Lee Morgan: The Sidewinder (1963).

Blue Note Records is an American jazz record label that is owned by Universal Music Group and operated with Decca Records. Established in 1939 by Alfred Lion and Max Margulis, it derives its name from the blue notes of jazz and the blues. Originally dedicated to recording traditional jazz and small group swing, from 1947 the label began to switch its attention to modern jazz.

In 1976-7 the Blue Note and Liberty trademarks belonged to United Artists, who licensed Toshiba-EMI to use them in Japan.
