The CSA developed from a Baptist congregation called the Zarephath-Horeb Community Church, founded in 1971 in the small community of Elijah in southern Missouri

Named after a radical right-wing American organization - and possibly for that reason simply retitled The Arm of the Lord in the States - Covenant, self-produced by the group at its longtime studio Western Works, is something of a curious release. While not much like Code and the group's absolute nadir, Groovy, Laidback and Nasty, Covenant still subtly indicates the band's incipient spiral into fairly unremarkable late-eighties mediocrity. Still, though, there's just something about this album which feels a bit half-cocked - fans will find something to enjoy, but first-timers should turn elsewhere.

Cabaret Voltaire struggled with several censorship issues with Some Bizarre Virgin Records upon the release of this album. The original title, The Covenant, The Sword, and the Arm of the Lord, was forced to be shortened in America to avoid reference to the US white supremacist organisation. Cabaret Voltaire were warned by their record label that they were required to have a charting single or face getting dropped, so the group subversively released a music video for the track "I Want You" which Richard H. Kirk later admitted was about masturbation. The album peaked at in the UK, which secured their future with the label. However the group switched to EMI for the release of Code, their 1987 follow up album.
