Red Mecca (LP, Album). Rough Trade, Rough Trade. Things begin and end with Henry Mancini’s A Touch of Evil, and everything in between is seething and grimy. By today’s standards the synths and vocoded snarling sounds a little dated, but that just adds to the fun.

It isn't without reason that Red Mecca is often referred to as one of Cabaret Voltaire's most cohesive and brilliant records. Red Mecca is as perfect an album as any to describe the desolate Margaret Thatcher years, it's destitute soundscapes evoke an economy spiraling out of control, blatant class discrimination, and mass closure of the industries of the North. It was truly a time when residents of anywhere north of Wales could claim it was 'grim up north'. Out of this chaos, embittered hatred and loathing came a movement of musicians who, like the punks before them, couldn't play instruments, but were sufficiently pissed off to try, this time, on cheap imported synthesisers.
Red Mecca is the third studio album by English band Cabaret Voltaire. It was released in September 1981, through record label Rough Trade. In November 1979 Cabaret Voltaire toured the United States, and became strongly interested in the rise of the Christian right and its use of television, especially the fund-raising broadcasts of TV evangelist Eugene Scott. They compared this to the rise of Islamism, devoting a side to each strand of religious politics on their 1980 mini-album Three Mantras
