Boheme is the second album of the French duo Deep Forest, released in 35 countries. It mainly sampled Eastern European gypsy songs (. the Bohemians, hence the name of the album) with electronic music. Hit singles included "Marta's Song" (featuring Márta Sebestyén) and "Freedom Cry". The album became the duo's most successful one, selling over 4 million copies, receiving Diamond, Platinum and Gold awards in 15 countries and winning the Grammy Award for Best World Music Album.
Germaine Feraldy studied at the Conservatory in Toulouse and at the National Conservatory in Paris. After she had first sung in French provincial theatres she came to the Opera-Comique in 1924, remaining there until 1942 having great success in both coloratura parts and lyric roles, such as Manon, Marguerite, and Violetta. She made guest appearances at the opera houses in Nice, Monte Carlo, Brussels, and London, and was very successful as a concert singer. After her retirement from the stage, she held a professorship at the Toulouse Conservatory
La bohème is an opera in four acts, composed by Giacomo Puccini to an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, based on Scènes de la vie de bohème by Henri Murger. The world premiere of La bohème was in Turin on 1 February 1896 at the Teatro Regio, conducted by the 28-year-old Arturo Toscanini. Since then, La bohème has become part of the standard Italian opera repertory and is one of the most frequently performed operas worldwide.
Much like Deep Forest's debut album, Boheme is a combination of club music and worldbeat. While the album is certainly danceable, it works better as trance-inducing mood music, although it isn't quite as consistent as the debut. A beautiful, radical fusion can be found on Deep Forest's latest release, Boheme (550/Sony). Their previous record also concentrated on the indigenous pygmies of central Africa. This one takes a great deal of inspiration from Eastern Europe as well.
A young woman knocks on the door of an attic abode in Stockholm’s Old Town and a young writer opens the door. This is the start of one of the greatest love stories of all time. Inspired by his own days as a poor student, Giacomo Puccini, with warmth and passion, depicts the lives of young dreamers, bohemians in 1800s Paris. The renowned tenor, director and conductor José Cura, shines Nordic light over Puccini’s masterpiece, moving La Bohème from Paris to a fictitious Stockholm. The writer, Rodolfo is recast as August Strindberg, the artist Marcello as Edvard Munch, the philosopher Colline as Søren Kierkegaard, the composer Schaunard as Edvard Grieg and the cabaret singer Musetta as Tulla Larsen. Staying faithful to the music and libretto in this moving, tragicomic drama, José Cura created his very own Scandinavian Bohème for the Royal Swedish Opera in 2015.

We always enjoy eating at La Boheme. it is usually our favourite spot for the start of the holiday. I particularly like their sepia, and often choose several tapas or starter portions rather than a big meal. Date of visit: May 2019.
