Jeru was already spearheading the movement against pop in rap music, and the ignorance that plagues certain elements of hip-hop culture. If you love classic hip-hop, you will love this album.

Features Song Lyrics for Jeru the Damaja's The Sun Rises in the East album. Jeru the Damaja Lyrics provided by SongLyrics.

DJ Premier's first album-length production outside of Gang Starr was his best by far. Where Premier's productions hadn't shone underneath the cracking, over-earnest vocals of Guru, with a superior stylist like Jeru these tracks became brilliant musical investigations with odd hooks (often detuned bells, keys, or vibes), perfectly scratched upchoruses, and the grittiest, funkiest Brooklynese beats pounding away in the background. It lacks a landmark track, but The Sun Rises in the East stands alongside Nas' Illmatic (released the same year, and also boasting the work of Premier) as one of the quintessential East Coast records.

And they were not disappointed by Jeru the Damaja's aptly titled debut, The Sun Rises in the East. His ability to drop rhymes filled with Biblical references and simultaneously speak out against the . M credo that permeates hip-hop is unparalleled. classic rap !! the beginnin' of Hip Hop !!! Published on August 18, 2014.

Jeru the Damaja was born February 14, 1972, in Brooklyn, New York, and spent his early years in the borough's East New York neighborhood, where he began rhyming at block parties as a youth. Davis's first album, The Sun Rises in the East, was released in 1994 and produced entirely by DJ Premier. The album was well-received but was criticized by the Fugees for its lyrics, particularly for the song "Da Bichez". Fugees member Pras lightly mentioned Jeru on the track "Zealots", from the group's landmark 1996 album The Score, with the. line "No matter who you damage, you're still a false prophet", referencing Jeru's single "You Can't Stop the Prophet"
