Me December 3rd will see the official worldwide release of Nils Frahm’s free birthday gift to his fans, entitled ‘Screws’. Nils experienced an unfortunate accident, which saw him fall from his bunk bed located directly above his studio, which resulted in a broken thumb. But through inspiration from his fans and despite the 4 screws that had just been surgically placed inside his thumb, he started recording with 9 fingers, which later resulted in 9 intimate piano recordings.

Nils Frahm (born 20 September 1982) is a German musician, composer, and record producer based in Berlin. He is known for combining classical and electronic music and for an unconventional approach to the piano in which he mixes a grand piano, upright piano, Roland Juno-60, Rhodes piano, drum machines, and Moog Taurus. As well as his solo work, Frahm has released collaborations with such notable performers as Anne Müller, Ólafur Arnalds, F. S. Blumm and Woodkid.

Nils Frahm had an early introduction to music, learning the piano throughout his childhood. It was through this that Nils began to immerse himself in the styles of classical pianists from previous generations as well as the music of contemporary composers, before forging his own musical path through composition. Nils then recorded the 2012 works Screws while recovering from a thumb injury, which he gifted to his fans on his birthday. Erased Tapes also released Juno Reworked featuring remixes by Luke Abbott and Clark. Recorded over a period of two years the album captured live performances from various of his concerts worldwide. Nils also released his first music book in the same year, Sheets Eins, publishing the sheet music for tracks such as Ambre and Said and Done for the very first time.

SCREWS' was the result of inspiration from my fans and friends while I recovered from an unfortunate thumb injury. I offered my fans nine recordings to download and in return you started to send me your remixes, reworks, audio and visual reinterpretations.

This album was written over the course of Nils Frahm’s recovery from a thumb injury that required screws, described in his own words below: I am sitting in front of a sheet of paper. My right hand is bending over my left thumb.

While a musician’s ability to overcome the temporary loss of a thumb certainly doesn’t match the achievements of the Paralympians last summer, there’s something similarly uplifting about the genesis of Nils Frahm’s latest, delicate album. Provoked by an unfortunate accident involving a bunk bed and gravity, Screws – named after the four pieces of metal doctors used to hasten the healing process – finds the increasingly acclaimed pianist inspired by his predicament to compose within his limitations rather than follow doctor’s advice and leave his instrument alone during his recovery.
