Album · 2014 · 18 Songs. The great conductor and music director of the Berlin Philharmonic, Sir Simon Rattle, calls Robert Schumann (1810-56) the true Romantic. If there’s anyone who sums it up, he truly does. The second of his four symphonies is the most widely played today, but all four of these works are truly unusual and compelling masterpieces, with which the Berlin Philharmonic has a long-standing and particularly deep association.
This list of compositions by Robert Schumann is classified into piano, vocal, choral, orchestral and chamber works. All works are also listed separately, by opus number. Schumann wrote almost exclusively for the piano until 1840, when he burst into song composition around the time of his marriage to Clara Wieck. Op. 1, Variations on the name "Abegg" (1830). 3, Études after Paganini Caprices (1832). 4, Intermezzi (1832).
