You Well-Meaning Brought Me Here is the 1971 album by British folk musician Ralph McTell. The album was produced by Gus Dudgeon, who also produced Elton John's early albums. All tracks composed by Ralph McTell. Genesis I Verse 20" – 4:27. First and Last Man" – 3:39. In Some Way I Loved You" – 2:54. Lay Your Money Down" – 2:47. Old Brown Dog" – 4:29. Pick Up a Gun" – 4:21. You Well-Meaning Brought Me Here" – 3:17. The Ballad of Dancing Doreen" – 3:10.
The second half of the album revolves around character and story songs, but the whole album reflects McTell's broad experience, especially of some of the seamier sides of life. In that sense, the substitution on the American version of the album of his most famous song, "Streets of London," for "Chalkdust," which appeared on the British version, was an appropriate one, since it fit with the sympathetic depictions of other poor people on the record.

Ballad Of Dancing Doreen. This song is by Ralph McTell and appears on the album You Well-Meaning Brought Me Here (1971). See how the lady moves so gracefully across the dance hall floor. All eyes upon the two thousand hand-sewn sequins on the gown she woreShe not only moves, but she looks like a queenMaking up for the evenings at home that she spent with her sewing machine.
I know every stranger here and the love they lend But now that's gone and still the need for it goes on Oh how I need a good friend I should have know that in the end I'd have to answer to myself And though you well meaning brought me here now you cannot help. And I never meant to come this far And I never thought I'd loose my way And now I know who "they" are But I still get hurt by the things they say This place has no kings only courtiers live here Fine words, fine clothes, fine promises that they make in fear. I am tired but I cannot rest beneath this roof If here.
