The Yes Album is the third studio album by the English progressive rock band Yes, released on 19 February 1971 by Atlantic Records. It is their first album with guitarist Steve Howe, who replaced Peter Banks in 1970, and their last in the 1970s to feature keyboardist Tony Kaye. The album was the first by the group not to feature any cover versions of songs.

The Yes Album started a new plane for Yes, Steve Howe said in 2013, where we were completely original. Not doing other people’s songs, but creating our own music. When I joined, I said: ‘Isn’t it time Yes did the whole thing?’ They all felt the same. First released in February 1971, Yes’s third full-lengther felt like the first real Yes album according to Jon Anderson. With Peter Banks having left, Howe came in with a dazzling scope of guitar sonics and styles while the band, skint and fed up of watching other bands they knew break big, jettisoned the stabilisers.

Their third time out proved the charm - The Yes Album constituted a de facto second debut, introducing the sound that would carry them forward across the next decade or more. Gone are any covers of outside material, the group now working off of its own music from the ground up.

Notes

B3 Recorded live, Lyceum, London

Bizarrely, a bit of a 'faux pas' on the part of the Italian production; first of all, the words "The Yes" appear on the front cover instead of "The Yes Album", as on all other copies spread across the world! (See Front Cover picture); second, the classic track-list was criminally reordered, moving "The Clap" from Side 1 to Side 2 (from A2 to B3) (see Rear Cover picture and the side 1 and 2 close-up photographs). This definitely is the most bizarre version of "The Yes Album" issues, but nonetheless sound quality remains the same.
