Profile: German classical alto vocalist. B&G 011. Ralph Mangelsdorff. Bourbon & Garlic.

Albert Mangelsdorff (September 5, 1928 – July 25, 2005) was a German jazz trombonist. Working mainly in free jazz, he was recognized as an innovator who became famous for his use of multiphonics. Mangelsdorff was born in Frankfurt. He was given violin lessons as a child and was self-taught on guitar in addition to knowing trombone. His brother, alto saxophonist Emil Mangelsdorff, introduced him to jazz during the Nazi period (a time when it was forbidden in Germany).

Album · 1990 · 14 Songs. Trombone Summit (with Albert Mangelsdorff, Bill Watrous & Jiggs Whigham).

A new semi-succulent species of Euphorbia (Euphorbiaceae), E. erythrocucullata, is described from SW Madagascar. The taxon is placed in the subgenus Lacanthis Raf. and grouped with E. pedilanthoides Denis; placement in this group is discussed. A new species, Ceropegia yemenensis Meve & Mangelsdorff (pegieae), from the province of Damar in northern Yemen, is described and illustrated. Including this new species, the flora of Yemen now contains 11 Ceropegia species.

Fiedler is the perfect person to perform the Mangelsdorff book. As a trombonist, and an extraordinary one, Fiedler exploits Mangelsdorff’s sophisticated, complex writing, which focuses on the expansive possibilities of the horn. Fiedler has a total command of the technique of multi-phonics (the ability to play and sing a note simultaneously, leading to the illusion of self-harmonizing) that characterizes much of Mangelsdorff’s work, and like his German role model, Fiedler is a brilliant soloist in his own right, something that comes through clearly on these tracks. Fiedler attributes the complexity of the compositions and the uniqueness of Mangelsdorff’s improvisational style as discouraging other trombonists from playing his tunes, yet, as Fiedler notes, the marvelous melodies are worth pursuing.
