Gershwin Plays Gershwin: The Piano Rolls is an album of piano rolls recorded (with one exception) by George Gershwin. It was released by Nonesuch Records in 1993. Gershwin recorded these piano rolls between 1916 and 1927. Several rolls use overdubbing, so that Gershwin is in effect playing a four-handed piece solo. The final selection, "An American In Paris", was recorded by Frank Milne in 1933

This particular release has quite a few obscure Gershwin songs, including his very first tune, "When You Want 'Em, You Can't Get 'Em, When You've Got 'Em, You Don't Want 'E. Certainly such tunes as "Novelette in Fourths," "So Am I," and "Idle Dreams" are long forgotten but worth reviving. Among the other highlights of the fascinating and highly enjoyable recital are "Sweet and Lowdown," "Swanee" and a 14-minute rendition of "Rhapsody in Blue

The quality of Gershwin's music can gain nothing from my redundant praise, however what should be noted is that this set of CD's is truly the best way to hear him play. The producers of this CD spared no expense in bringing a fresh, living sound to these Gershwin performances. They used computer technology to flawlessly transfer the playing data from the original piano rolls to a disc used by the Yamaha Disclavier 9 foot grand piano. The richness of the piano, the pure tone, the open air sound of it, the way it breathes, this is the one you want. It doesn't sound like some mechanical reproduction of a great pianist and composer. It sounds like a great pianist and composer playing in a fine concert hall and you're in the front row.
