Pianist Bill Charlap limited himself to Leonard Bernstein-penned tunes for his previous album, Somewhere (Blue Note, 2004). For the followup (or -on, one might say) he has chosen to concentrate exclusively on another giant of American music, George Gershwin, with undoubtedly fine results. The group shrinks and swells, depending on the treatment Charlap aims to give the material. The bandleader is flanked only by his familiar duo of Washingtons, drummer Kenny and bassist Peter (no relation), on the effervescent opener, "Who Cares?", and the swift and succinct "Liza. The American Soul may not shatter Charlap's reputation as a mainstream pianist, but if that makes this album characteristic of the typical mainstream jazz release, the genre is in very good shape indeed. Oscar Peterson Plays the George Gershwin Songbook is a 1959 album by pianist Oscar Peterson of compositions written by George Gershwin. Peterson had recorded many of the pieces for his 1952 album Oscar Peterson Plays George Gershwin. It Ain't Necessarily So" – 2:48. The Man I Love" – 3:09. Love Walked In" – 2:49. I Was Doing All Right" – 2:50. Oh, Lady be Good!" – 3:02. Our Love is Here to Stay" – 2:59. They All Laughed" – 2:31

With his abundant but unshowy technique, Charlap is perfectly placed to explore and refresh these 10 numbers, most of which have been jazz favourites for decades. He did the same thing two years ago, to great applause, with Leonard Bernstein material, but this is even better. His light but irresistibly swinging piano takes well-known tunes like 'Who Cares' and 'Liza' along many fascinating new paths.

Bill Charlap's Gershwin project programs a selection of Gershwin compositions, adding four distinguished hornmen to his usual and now long-established trio. His previous set, on the music of Leonard Bernstein, involved adapting original Bernstein songs and applying individual approaches to some as vehicles for jazz improvisation. The musical style doesn't extend beyond what might have been done in the 1940s, which is not a fault. Charlap throughout plays with a light touch, and maybe there's some intention to respect the relative quietness of such earlier singers as Fred Astaire. Maybe it's the band or maybe it's Charlap. The piano trio "Who Cares?" is swung by Peter Washington's bass, then "Somebody Loves Me" comes in with a boppish sort of four-horn ensemble.

The Bill Charlie trio, with Peter Washington and Kenny Washington, kindly wraps them. Krall told Philip Lutz, she owed the success of this album immeasurably to the magic of Bill Charlap. DownBeat) Charlap said he spent about a week in preparation, adjusting tempos, keys, harmony, transitions, singing ranges and the like, however didn’t hold any rehearsals. All the artists had extensive resources, for Charlap, to draw on. Two vocalists’ voices are set at very close range to each other. In 2005, he also published Plays George Gershwin : The American Soul from BlueNote with original members. Four songs, Who Cares, Somebody Loves Me, ’S Wonderful and Nice Work If You Can Get It, are overlapped with this album. Bennett chose Fascinating Rhythm three times so far.

Besteciler: George Gershwin - Ira Gershwin. I Was So Young, And You Were So Beautiful. Plays George Gershwin: The American Soul. Besteciler: A. Bryan - I. Ceasar - George Gershwin.

Bill Charlap, a versatile pianist based in swing who is also a longtime member of the Phil Woods Quintet, pays tribute to the great George Gershwin throughout this likable set. Although some of the ten Gershwin songs are slightly modernized, the music is very much in the tradition. There are up to four horns on some numbers, with the best individual moments coming from veteran tenor Frank Wess on "How Long Has This Been Going On" (sounding a bit like Paul Gonsalves), trombonist Slide Hampton on "A Foggy Day," and altoist Woods whenever he plays. Charlap's longtime trio with bassist Peter Washington and drummer Kenny Washington is featured on "Who Cares?," and Charlap takes the brief closing "Soon" as an unaccompanied solo. Nothing all that revolutionary or revelatory occurs but the music is pleasing overall, swinging and creative within its boundaries. by Scott Yanow
