The title track on Neko’s triumphant 2006 album is based on a Ukrainian myth her grandmother told her as a kid. There are numerous versions, but the gist is that a cunning fox tricks a wolf into confessing his sins before totally screwing him over. The moral, beware those who promise salvation, is in keeping with what Neko told Spin in 2006: In a way, this whole record is about losing faith.

That album had me completely awestruck: Her huge, effortless voice, her vivid imagery, the emotional immediacy of the lyrics. In her own abstract, non-moralistic way, that’s what Neko Case does on her fourth album, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood - an indie-rock landmark released 10 years ago today (March 7, 2006). Partially inspired by the Ukrainian myths her grandmother told her as a kid, Fox Confessor is the Virginia-born, Tacoma-raised singer-songwriter’s attempt to figure out how fairytales are born, as she said in a statement announcing the project. Case had already hinted at where she was headed with her third album, 2002’s Blacklisted, which features plenty of the forebodingly sexy Twin Peaks guitars found here. But that LP came with more conventional song structures and parsable lyrics. On Fox Confessor, Neko sets fire to the rule book. Verses and choruses are out. Animal metaphors are in.

This is the title track of Fox Confessor Brings the Flood. Most of the songs on the album are based on Neko Case's life experience from her childhood until her adult age, which she united with an Eastern Europe fairy tale. She told Uncut magazine: "That was the first record where there was a bit of a cohesive theme. I was obsessed with fairy tales from Eastern Europe. I loved the way they were cautionary and funny, but they weren't morality tales.
