Furnace Room Lullaby is the second studio album by Neko Case and Her Boyfriends, released in February 2000, on Mint/Bloodshot Records & Loose. Said Case of the title track at a performance at Austin City Limits in 2003, "I wanted to write a murder ballad, simply because I was such a huge fan of the Louvin Brothers. Not that this song is anywhere as good as a Louvin Brothers song, but I tried.
1 Neko Case & Her Boyfriends. Solo Case's first work in Chicago was an eight-song EP that she recorded in her kitchen. Canadian Amp, her first recording without Her Boyfriends, was released on her own Lady Pilot label in 2001. She wrote two of the tracks, with the remaining six being covers, including Neil Young's "Dreaming Man" and Hank Williams' "Alone and Forsaken"
By turns mournful, defiant and forgiving, Neko Case secures her stature as Queen of Alt-Country on Furnace Room Lullaby. Her sophomore album more than lived up to the promise shown on her debut album The Virginian - this time, her gutsy vocals are matched by a fully-realized songwriting talent. Case spreads her wings as a honky-tonk angel on such bruised-up ballads as Twist the Knife, We’ve Never Met, and Bought and Sold. Not all is torment though – No Need to Cry is a sensuous torch number, delivered with a honeyed caress and she reaches the opposite extreme on Porchlight, the very.
