Land of Cockayne is the tenth studio album by the jazz rock band Soft Machine, released in 1981. By this point, the band contained none of its original members. The title refers to the medieval land of plenty. The album came about as the result of a project in which Karl Jenkins and John Marshall had been involved featuring top session musicians. The ad hoc band, Rollercoaster, had recently recorded the Stevie Wonder tribute album Wonderin' and decided to record another album together

Land of Cockayne didn't start life as a Soft Machine album, and the personnel bears little connection to even its final live incarnation. It was, in fact, a solo album from Karl Jenkins-keyboardist and erstwhile reedman who, according to unforgiving fans of the "classic" Soft Machine line-up, was singularly responsible for the group's creative decline.

LAND OF COCKAYNE is NOT a guitar album as the presence of ALLAN HOLDSWORTH is rather discreet on this recording. Also the saxophones are back in the front after their influence started to shrink with the SIX album to become completely non-existent on ALIVE AND WELL IN PARIS. But we are not over with our surprises as there are no. acking vocals!!!on some tracks and let's not forget the presence of a string ensemble. Last studio album, still having the right be named Soft Machine's work, was released five years ago, and Land Of Cockayne obviously attracted many old band's fans at the time of release. But main reaction on it's music was deep disappointment. Looking from now, this album isn't so tragic, the main problem is it's not Soft Machine's album at all.

The Land of Cockayne should be seen as a concept album about musical opulence, with the tracks aligned to take the listener into a vast range of musical moods and styles. This is Soft Machines final album, even if it doesn't have any of the original members or most of the replacement members. The album is just . by my taste, you don't want to hate it but you don't want to love it. This album if also filled with some famous and obsured legends like Jack Bruce or Allen Holdsworth.
