Carousel is Rogers and Hammerstein's most beautiful and memorable score of all the wonderful musicals they have written. I have seen several productions of Carousel over the years, including Nicholas Hytner's production at the Lincoln Center in 1994. All had their merits and were enjoyable, mainly because of the music. But this current production on Broadway takes the prize. The orchestrations and arrangements are fresh and lush, the choreography spectacular, and the vocals magnificent. THIS recording is THE most intoxicating cast album. The Carousel Waltz will bring you to chills, it's that perfect. As for Jessie Mueller?

Rodgers and Hammerstein refers to the duo of composer Richard Rodgers (1902–1979) and lyricist-dramatist Oscar Hammerstein II (1895–1960), who together were an influential, innovative and successful American musical theatre writing team. They created a string of popular Broadway musicals in the 1940s and 1950s, initiating what is considered the "golden age" of musical theatre.
In 1954 General Foods sponsored a tribute to Rodgers & Hammerstein broadcast on multiple networks. Hosted by Mary Martin and featuring segments from OKLAHOMA!, STATE FAIR, CAROUSEL, ALLEGRO, SOUTH PACIFIC, THE KING AND I and ME AND JULIET with many members of the original casts, it also included special appearances from Jack Benny, Groucho Marx, Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy, Ed Sullivan, and Rodgers & Hammerstein.
