Rodgers and Hammerstein refers to the duo of composer Richard Rodgers (1902–1979) and lyricist-dramatist Oscar Hammerstein II (1895–1960), who together were an influential, innovative and successful American musical theatre writing team. They created a string of popular Broadway musicals in the 1940s and 1950s, initiating what is considered the "golden age" of musical theatre.

Oscar Hammerstein II had scant success in the decade between his groundbreaking collaborations with Jerome Kern on SHOW BOAT (1927) and with Richard Rodgers on OKLAHOMA! (1943). Reflecting on this period during his later triumph, Hammerstein filled a "Seasons Greetings"" advertisement in Variety with a list of his flop shows, titled ""I've done it before and I can do it again. Lorenzo Hart later dropped out of the project, but this show would become Rodgers and Hammerstein's first hit, OKLAHOMA!" In 1954, SOUTH PACIFIC closed on Broadway after five years and 1,925 performances. Original cast member Myron McCormick, who played Luther Billis, lead the final-night crowd in "Auld Lang Syne,"" and in a symbolic gesture the curtain remained unlowered. As of its closing, SOUTH PACIFIC was the second-longest running show in Broadway history, right behind OKLAHOMA!"

Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, and later collaborator Oscar Hammerstein II all attended Columbia University. At Columbia, Rodgers joined the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity. In 1921, Rodgers shifted his studies to the Institute of Musical Art (now the Juilliard School). Rodgers was influenced by composers such as Victor Herbert and Jerome Kern, as well as by the operettas his parents took him to see on Broadway when he was a child. Rodgers was the subject of a two-part special on Ed Sullivan's Toast of the Town television show in 1952. Much of Rodgers' work with both Hart and Hammerstein was orchestrated by Robert Russell Bennett.

Rodgers and Hart had a very long partnership. Hart's death officially ended their partnership. But it was already ending. So before we get to how Hammerstein entered the picture, why were things between Rodgers and Hart so rocky at the end? PURDUM: Well, they had been close friends and partners for more than two decades, Terry. But as you point out, as 1942 rolled around, Larry Hart was increasingly falling prey to a problem that had plagued him for years, which was severe alcoholism. THOMAS: Now, with Hart, you followed the traditional Broadway habit of writing the music first. Hammerstein was used to this method, too. But when you collaborated, you switched.

Sony Music Entertainment celebrated the 50th anniversary of the partnership of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II in 1993 by compiling this CD-length collection of songs by the pair drawn from original Broadway cast albums and other recordings from the company's catalog, originally released in the 1940s, '50s, and '60s by Columbia Records, Sony's flagship label

Before they became Rodgers and Hammerstein, they were simply Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, both of New York City. Hammerstein, born in 1895, was brought up in a theatrical family. His father was an ?operatic impresario?, otherwise known as an opera director or manager. Rodgers and Hart collaborated from 1918 to 1943 and produced twenty-seven stage musicals and eight motion picture scores. Rodgers and Hammerstein finally met in the early 1940s. Their first show was Oklahoma! which debut a success and began the series of smash hits for Rodgers and Hammerstein. Their other shows were Carousel (1945), Allegro (1947), South Pacific (1949), The King and I (1951), Me and Juliet (1953), Pipe Dream (1955), Flower Drum Song (1958), and The Sound of Music (1959).
