Hammerstein directed the British staging, which opened at the Palace Theatre in London September 17, 1980, and, with a run of 419 performances, was even more successful than its New York counterpart. Surprisingly, the cast recording was contracted out to Stiff Records, best known as a new wave rock label, and probably on economic grounds, Stiff opted to record the show live at the theater. The result is a sonically challenged recording. Clearly, the players were not wearing body mikes, and so their voices move up and down in volume depending on where they are and what they're doing.
Rodgers and Hammerstein refers to the duo of composer Richard Rodgers (1902–1979) and lyricist-dramatist Oscar Hammerstein II (1895–1960), who together were an influential, innovative and successful American musical theatre writing team. They created a string of popular Broadway musicals in the 1940s and 1950s, initiating what is considered the "golden age" of musical theatre.

Experience Rodgers & Hammerstein like never before! Contemporary twists on timeless classics, R&H GOES POP! is an unforgettable celebration of 75 years of Broadway’s most influential collaborators. It is 1862 in Siam when an English widow, Anna Leonowens, and her young son arrive at the Royal Palace in Bangkok, having been summoned by the King to serve as tutor to his many children and wives.
When Mary Rodgers, daughter of the composer Richard Rodgers, was reported as saying she never wanted to see another Oklahoma!, it was her way of paying the highest tribute to Trevor Nunn's production at the Royal National Theatre which was subsequently taken into the studio and filmed. The camera follows the playgoers into the auditorium of the Olivier where in their company we watch the show and applaud the numbers as the real thing.
Rodgers and Hammerstein approached the story with the honesty and simplicity that characterized all their work. Another album of four songs from the score, covered by Vic Damone, Peggy King and Paul Weston’s Orchestra, was released exactly four weeks before air date. And finally, on March 19, in the midst of rehearsals, the entire CINDERELLA company dashed over to the Columbia Record Studios to make an original cast album. The London Coliseum in England had the honor of performing it live for the first time, with a 1958 holiday pantomime adaptation that also used songs from ME & JULIET.
Rodgers and Hammerstein return to a theme that had served them well in both The King and I and South Pacific: misunderstanding and reconciliation between individuals of differing cultural backgrounds. This 1958 musical revolved around the meeting of old and new worlds in San Francisco's Chinatown. Flower Drum Song has a serviceable score, but is not the team's most exciting. The novelty "I Enjoy Being a Girl" is more often excerpted than the lovely and overlooked "Love Look Away.
