Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma! Scarborough Village Theatre. Original Dances by: Agnes de Mille. The Oklahoma Territory in 1906 is a frontier on the verge of becoming a state where the farmer and the cowman must learn to be friends and young lovers attend box socials in a surrey with a fringe on the top. The original 1943 production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic ran for more than five years and remains an audience pleasing staple of the musical theatre cannon to this day! Recommended for all ages.
Rodgers and Hammerstein refers to the duo of composer Richard Rodgers (1902–1979) and lyricist-dramatist Oscar Hammerstein II (1895–1960), who together were an influential, innovative and successful American musical theatre writing team. They created a string of popular Broadway musicals in the 1940s and 1950s, initiating what is considered the "golden age" of musical theatre.
Rodgers & Hammerstein were then inspired to turn GREEN GROW THE LILACS into a new type of musical play ? what became their first hit OKLAHOMA! In 1922 Joan Roberts, the original Laurey in OKLAHOMA! (1943), was born in New York City. In 1943, Decca Records released the original cast album of OKLAHOMA! - the first comprehensive Original Broadway Cast Recording. In 1947, OKLAHOMA! celebrated its 2,000th performance on Broadway. Calling Rodgers and Hammerstein's OKLAHOMA! a classic American musical is an understatement. Like Grant Wood's 'American Gothic' and Mark Twain's novels, or George Gershwin's 'Rhapsody in Blue' and Chuck Berry's rock 'n' roll, OKLAHOMA! is firmly embedded in the canon of America's greatest cultural creations.
Fish’s vision treats Rodgers and Hammerstein’s 1943 musical with deep respect, shining a hard light on its underlying issues of justice, violence and the autonomy of women. It ventures into rough territory and leaves the show in a brand-new state. Adam Feldman for Time Out New York. Purists will sniff anyway, but for audiences open to experiencing Rodgers & Hammerstein's Oklahoma! from a fresh perspective, director Daniel Fish's probing revamp will be a revelation. David Rooney for Hollywood Reporter. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that director Fish has deconstructed this beloved warhorse (which was a groundbreaker in its own day, it should be remembered): Nowadays, I think they drum you out of the Directors Guild if you direct a classic the way it was written.
