As early as the Icicle Works' second album, it became obvious that singer/songwriter Ian McNabb had little interest in further pursuing his career as a new wave tunesmith in the manner of his only . hit, "Love Is a Wonderful Colour. Still, stylistic nods to Neil Young, Van Morrison, and Motown on post-1984 recordings could have hardly prepared the causal Icicle Works fan for the all-over-the-map musical journey that represented the original lineup's fourth and final album, Blind.

The Icicle Works is the eponymous debut album by The Icicle Works. The album was released in 1984 and charted at number 24 in the UK and number 40 in the US. The original 1984 issue features different track listings and cover artwork in the UK, in the USA, and in Canada. Disc 1 consists of the original album in its entirety, in the UK configuration

Later that year, The Icicle Works released their biggest UK hit, 1983s Love is a Wonderful Colour and their 1984 eponymous debut album followed shortly thereafter, reached number 24 on the UK charts and entered the US top 40. Appearing on the US top 40 singles charts at around the time was Whisper to a Scream. After the release of their debut album the Icicle Works struggled to match their initial commercial success. However, they continued to receive critical acclaim as a live band, in September 1984 the band issued the UK-only single Hollow Horse, which flopped.
