For McNabb's eponymous fifth album, see Ian McNabb (album). McNabb's first musical performance was playing "You're Sixteen" at Fairfield Conservative Club in Liverpool in 1974. In 1975, he auditioned and joined the young cabaret group Daybreak (Later renamed "Young World"). The group played at men's clubs around the North-West of England during the mid-1970s. At the end of the year, McNabb released his autobiography, entitled Merseybeast: A Musical Memoir.

An excerpt from Ian McNabb's forthcoming audiobook Merseybeast: A Musical Memoir.

Merseybeat: A Musical Memoir by Various artists. Love and other wonderful colours. Record Collector is the world's leading authority on rare and collectable records. Ian McNabb is the most talented singer/songwriter to emerge from Liverpool since Lennon and McCartney – first with The Icicle Works and then with his solo albums, especially 1988’s The Emotional Party. You need an ego in this business and McNabb’s is bigger than most, surpassing even his friend Pete Wylie. Nevertheless, despite his selfish and adolescent behaviour, McNabb is a very endearing and engaging author, fully aware of his own faults, while refusing to do anything about them

Merseybeast: A Musical Memoir (Unabridged). Singer/guitarist Ian McNabb cannot erase the memory of "Birds Fly (Whisper to a Scream)" from the minds of music listeners. Released in 1984, "Birds Fly" was McNabb's highest-charting single with the Icicle Works in America. In fact, with the exception of minimal alternative radio airplay for "Understanding Jane" and "Evangeline," it provided the Icicle Works' only . exposure, tagging the band with a misleading one-hit wonder label. In 1995, McNabb's solo album Head Like a Rock was lauded by critics. Stripping away the Icicle Works' new wave quirks, McNabb employed members ofNeil Young's Crazy Horse to rip through a series of raw, guitar-heavy rock reminiscent of Bruce Springsteen. Loud and bluesy, Head Like a Rock finally established McNabb as a serious artist among critics.
