Wolfgang Stockmeier (13 December 1931 – 11 December 2015) was a German composer, church musician, concert organist and academic. From 1962, he was professor of music theory, organ playing and organ improvisation at the Musikhochschule Köln, and also lectured in Düsseldorf and Herford. He made more than 150 recordings of organ music. Born in Essen, Stockmeier studied from 1951 music pedagogy and church music at the Musikhochschule Köln.
Since 1960 Wolfgang Stockmeier taught at the Kölner Musikhochschule theory, organ and organ improvisation. In 1962 he was appointed as professor. In 1970 he was appointed as director of church music. In 1974 he took over, as successor of Michael Schneider, the directorship of the department for Evangelist church music. He taught also in Düsseldorf and Herford. Wolfgang Stockmeier has given so far nearly 3,000 organ concerts and has published about 150 works. He has recorded the complete organ works of .
Wolfgang Stockmeier, born in 1931 in Essen, studied church music, school music, composition, musicology, German and philosophy in Cologne. In 1957 he did his doctorate and from 1957–1960 he worked in higher education in Essen, then as a head of department at the state teacher training college, before taking on a position as professor for organ, improvisation and composition at the music conservatory in Cologne until 1994. Wolfgang Stockmeier died on 11 December 2015.
Stockmeier's traversal of appropriate organs is marvelous, too, as you get to know the different tonal qualities of different instruments that Bach did (or might have, in some cases) played himself or had in mind when composing certain works. Stockmeier himself is not a virtuoso, not a showman, not a romanticist. His playing is perhaps best described with "Professorial" - although in English that sounds like a bit more of a put down than I would want to imply.
