Slapp Happy's magnificent Desperate Straights, enhanced by Henry Cow volunteering themselves as a backing band, is an excellent counterpoint to the Cow-backed-by-Slapp album In Praise of Learning. Aside from the excellent War, In Praise of Learning was focused mainly on unwelcoming avant-garde soundscapes; here, though, Slapp Happy's more song- based approach reigns supreme, as does a more diverse musical aesthetic.

1974 studio album by Slapp Happy. Slapp Happy (also known as Casablanca Moon) is a studio album by German/British avant-pop group Slapp Happy, recorded at Virgin Records' Manor Studio in 1974. This album was originally recorded in 1973 in Germany under a working title of Casablanca Moon with Faust as Slapp Happy's backing band, but Polydor Germany rejected it. After moving to London and signing with Virgin Records, Slapp Happy re-recorded it (at Virgin's request) and it was released in 1974 as Slapp Happy. A second UK pressing of the album used the title Casablanca Moon on the label (though not on the cover). with Henry Cow. Desperate Straights. In Praise of Learning.
And (of course) Henry Cow joined Slapp Happy. Certainly this a spikier beast than the cool pastiche of that album; Dagmar's voice is a harder, more expressive presence, and the gluing together of pop sensibilities and avant-rock experimentalism results in rich, dynamic music. There are the usual traces of Zappa, Kurt Weilland Bartok, but then there's cheerful Hawaiian-edged pop strumming ('Strayed') or a song which seems to harnesselements of psychedelia and muted prog in a mournful tale of a dying relationship ("Riding Tigers").
Although Desperate Straights, the first of the team-ups, isn't necessarily the best place to start for either Slapp Happy or Henry Cow, fans of each group should find that the album combines the best of both bands without sacrificing either group's individuality. Like the first Slapp Happy album(s) (the history of their second album is too complicated to go into now-I recommend Acnalbasac Noom above the other options), Desperate Straights is primarily structured around the lyrics of Peter Blegvad, sung by the peerless Dagmar Krause, set to music by both Blegvad and Anthony Moore
Desperate Straights, a collaboration with British avant-prog band Henry Cow, was Slapp Happy's third official LP. The band's first record, Sort Of, had been completed with assistance from Faust, while their second, self-titled album (later released as Casablanca Moon), was originally recorded for Polydor but then scrapped and re-recorded when the band signed to Virgin. Those first two Slapp Happy records were soft pop for eccentrics, informed by British Invasion rock, Dylan, and hints of European cafe music. Desperate Straights was a slightly different story
Overall, Desperate Straights is an excellent and enjoyable album with a diverse musical aesthetic with some experimental twists, although this release is more representative of Slapp Happy song based approach rather than Henry Cow's avant-garde work. It can also be called a prequel to the style that was later used on the Art Bears project. Ennio Morricone Once Upon a Time in the West. Brian Eno Discreet Music.
