In Praise of Learning is a studio album by British avant-rock group Henry Cow, recorded at Virgin Records' Manor studios in February and March 1975, and released in May 1975. On this album, Henry Cow had expanded to include members of Slapp Happy, who had merged with the group after the two had collaborated on Desperate Straights in 1974. The merger ended after recording In Praise of Learning when Peter Blegvad and Anthony Moore from Slapp Happy left the group.
Henry Cow's politics were as radical as their music, - no wonder the dominant color of the artwork is red, which symbolizes Communist ideologies - and this was never more explicit than on In Praise of Learning, the second album to emerge from the Henry Cow/Slapp Happy collaboration and the third Henry Cow album. Two albums were recorded almost at the same time by both groups together, the first one being released under Slapp Happy's name and called Desperate Straights, while this one was released a few months later
Producer – Henry Cow, Phil Becque, Slapp Happy. Recorded By, Mixed By – Phil Becque (tracks: 2 to 6). Remix – Tim Hodgkinson. In Praise Of Learning (LP, Album, RE). Red Records (2). RED 003.
Desperate Straights is a collaborative studio album by British avant-rock groups Slapp Happy and Henry Cow. It was recorded at Virgin Records' Manor studios in November 1974, and released in February 1975. It was Slapp Happy's second album for Virgin, and they had invited Henry Cow to record with them. The album is a blend of avant-garde music and nostalgic pop, and the success of this collaboration led to the two bands merging and recording In Praise of Learning in 1975
In Praise of Learning. Henry Cow/Slapp Happy w/ Dagmar at the helm make Portishead sound like a panty-waist garage band that can't muster inspiration nor cull up an urge. In Praise of Learning is as Beautiful as the Moon, as Terrible as an Army with Banners.
Arranged By, Producer – Henry Cow, Simon Heyworth, Slapp Happy. A1 - Some Questions About Hats. A3 - A Worm Is at Work. HENRY COW – In Praise Of Learning (LP-1975).
