Released in September 2007, Dark Passion Play is the sixth studio album from Nightwish and is the the first to not feature singer Tarja Turunen who was fired from the band in 2005. Her replacement, Anette Olzon, would only feature on this album and 2011’s Imaginarium before being replaced with Floor Jansen. Musically, Dark Passion Play largely follows the darker, more brooding style of the previous album, Once. The album cost more than €800,000 to record and featured the London Philharmonic Orchestra. The album would eventually go 4x Platinum (with total sales of more than 130,000) in Finland.

Although it is their sixth studio album,Dark Passion Play marks the beginning of a new era for Finnish symphonic metal masters Nightwish. Firmly rooted in their trademark symphonic sounds featuring elaborate keyboard and guitar parts blended seamlessly with intricate string and choir sections, Olzon's vocals have more pop sensibility as they are far less operatic than those of her predecessor. Nightwish returns with an ambitious epic metal opus that begins promisingly enough but quickly devolves into another formulaic power rock affair. The band's at its most powerful and convincing on the opening "The Poet and the Pendulum" (all 14 minutes of it), the dynamic "Bye Bye Beautiful," and the infectious pop-inflected "Amaranth.
