The Wagner brought to an end the ground-breaking Wagner Ring cycle delivered over about six years by Solti and the VPO. The Schubert is significant because it is an early example of Decca’s digital recordings and, on a more personal note, it also marked Solti’s 70th birthday treat to himself! Solti famously described his beginnings with the VPO in less than glowing terms in his memoirs with problems with the orchestra choosing to play behind the beat and being less than co-operative to ideas over interpretation etc.
The works are based loosely on characters from the Norse sagas and the Nibelungenlied. The composer termed the cycle a "Bühnenfestspiel" (stage festival play), structured in three days preceded by a Vorabend ("preliminary evening"). It is often referred to as the Ring Cycle, Wagner's Ring, or simply The Ring.

The first original recording of Wagner’s Ring. Starting with Das Rheingold in 1958, followed by Siegfried (1962), Götterdämmerung (1964), and finally Die Walküre (1965), Decca spent a total of 8 years in the studio working to produce the complete collection of the musical drama Der Ring des Nibelungen. This grand undertaking was more than just the first full recording of this work. The ensemble for this recording is nothing short of spectacular. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Georg Solti, who was in his forties at this time, the preeminent Wagner vocalists of the 20th, and acclaimed producer and avid Wagnerian John Culshaw, were all brought together to perform this masterpiece. Together they produced a recording full of passion and purpose.
COATES, BLECH Wagner: The Potted Ring, Vol. 1 (1926-32) - PACO107. HMV's Potted Ring, Volume 1: Das Rheingold and Die Walküre. This is a set no enquiring Wagnerian, whatever complete version of The Ring he or she owns, should be without" - Gramophone. The Siegfried recordings have a particularly convoluted history in the Potted Ring saga. Initially, HMV released an album of eight discs, combining two from Das Rheingold (featured in Volume 1 of our series) with six from Siegfried, in recordings made between June, 1927 and April, 1928. This set included the Wotan/Erda duet featured here (the only Potted Ring recordings to come from Vienna), as well as six sides with Rudolf Laubenthal as Siegfried.
Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra - Today one of the world’s most celebrated music ensembles, the Philharmonic was drawn together for the first time in 1842 by the composer and conductor Carl Otto Nicolai (1810–1849), who was then choir director for the Imperial Chapel.
