Wagner: Das Rheingold. If this slim two-disc set is a listener's first encounter with Georg Solti's Das Rheingold, he/she might be forgiven for thinking the recording was made in 2008 or 1988 or even 1968. But 1958? How could a recording this crisp, clean, detailed, full, deep, immediate, and overwhelmingly real have been recorded in 1958? It could have been and it was. Thanks to the combined genius of Decca producer John Culshaw and engineer Gordon Parry, Solti's 1958 Rheingold sounds as if it could have been recorded yesterday.
Sir Georg Solti Conducts Orchestral Highlights from Wagner's Ring - The Vienna Philharmonic. Wagner: Der Ring des Nibelungen- highlights ~ Karajan. This set of highlights is based on what is commonly regarded as the premier Ring cycle recording. Solti conducting the Vienna philharmonic and a superb cast. Birgit Nilsson, Hans Hotter, Wolfgang Windgassen etc. are about as good as it gets for the Ring. Compared to the Met two disk set, I believe this set features better singing and conducting.
Das Rheingold is the first of the four operas that make up Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen, the largest operatic work ever composed, and launches the incredible sound world of the cycle. Led by Alan Gilbert, the New York Philharmonic and a fabulous cast of singers introduce you to a titanic landscape of gods, giants, dwarves, and water spirits in this enhanced concert production of the opera. This season, Ms. Barton released her debut solo album, All Who Wander, featuring songs by Mahler, Dvořák, and Sibelius. He has appeared as Loge in Wagner’s Das Rheingold at the Edinburgh International Festival, Oper Stuttgart, and the Ruhrtriennale Festival. His other signature roles include Herod in Richard Strauss’s Salome, which he has performed in Milan, Madrid, Frankfurt, São Paulo, and Hong Kong; at the Bolshoi; and earlier this season with the Frankfurt Radio Symphony.
