Mitch Ryder (b. William S. Levise, J. February 26, 1945) is an American musician who has recorded more than two dozen albums over more than four decades. Ryder is noted for his gruff, wailing singing style and his dynamic stage performances. He was influenced by his father, a musician. As a teenager, Ryder sang backup with a black soul-music group known as the Peps, but racial animosities interfered with his continued presence in the group.

Mitch Ryder has made quite a few albums since he and the Detroit Wheels rolled out during 1965. But nothing has been quite like the new Detroit Breakout! The 14-song set, whose video for Ryder's new version of "Devil With a Blue Dress" is premiering exclusively below, features fresh takes on rock and pop classics ranging from "Cool Jerk" and "Dirty Water" to "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay," "Just My Imagination," "If I Had a Hammer" and a show-stopping "Turn Back the Hands of Time. But "joined" is a relative term, Ryder tells Billboard, as he didn't know who would be on the album, or which tracks they'd appear on. "It's sort of a new way to put a record together, and an interesting way," says Ryder, who recorded his Detroit Breakout! vocals in Austin, Texas, at the same time he recorded last year's Christmas (Take a Ride) as part of a two-album deal with Cleopatra Records.
After Mitch Ryder parted ways with The Detroit Wheels in 1967, he released a brace of solo albums before bringing Wheels drummer Johnny Badanjek back in 1970, along with a new crew, to form a band more in tune with the heavy-rocking sounds of the day. But while Ryder's blue-eyed soul shout is offset here by blistering guitar work from Steve Hunter and Brett Tuggle, in its way the album is as raw and unpretentious as Ryder's '60s hits. It's just that here, the R&B and first-wave rock 'n' roll influences are amped up for a newer and louder generation
The Detroit-Memphis Experiment. Mitch Ryder's voice is in great shape as Steve Cropper takes over the production reigns from industry legend Bob Crewe. There are more than a few digs at Ryder's past in the liner notes, but the music is truly the voice from Detroit meeting the sound of Memphis. The 12 songs here are statements, all clocking in under four minutes and above two and a half. These compact tunes like "I Get Hot" and the Cropper/Levise original "Long Long Time" - not the Linda Ronstadt hit - have Ryder/Levise pouring his well-known voice all over the grooves
