Pony Express Record is a 1994 album by the Washington, . based post-hardcore group Shudder to Think. It was their first album to be recorded for Epic Records. Although switching to a major label from the independent Dischord Records shocked and alienated some fans of the group, Pony Express Record proved to be a challenging release, mixing musical styles as diverse as jazz, art-rock, glam, post-punk, noise rock and folk
Shudder To Think’s Pony Express Record-their major label debut released on Epic in 1994-revealed what a post-hardcore band can do when given the opportunity to step outside of everyone’s comfort zone. Sharpened with punk rock edges yet crafted to transcend them, the 13 songs on Pony Express Record didn’t resemble much else in alternative music at the time. The songs were played with guitars-and loud ones at that-and catchy choruses cropped up around the corners of the group’s atypical song structures

Pony Express Record is the sound of Shudder To Think trying to see how far they could go, prepared to destroy themselves in the process. It's remembered for it's brave experimentalism, but the songs, as strange as they may be, are pretty damn great. It's a musician's album, for sure. You have to think a little and submit to the album. But the amazing thing about it is that it is a pop album at it's core. Most progressive music (think Frank Zappa for example) seems to me to be a bunch notes for their own sake, to hear how they sound in succession and for the musicians to say "hey, look what we can do!"

Shudder to Think did not have this benefit and they seemed to be well aware of it, as evidenced by their choice for the first single, album opener Hit Liquor. If you’ve never heard this song, you should stop reading and go watch the music video for it, since it’s a good litmus test for whether or not you might enjoy this album. It only takes two lines for frontman Craig Wedren to bust out his impressive, trademark vibrato, and on the third he’s in falsetto. Pony Express Record is frequently considered to be one of the most underrated albums of the nineties, but in a perfect world this would frequently be considered one of the best albums of the nineties. It isn’t perfect, but music is too often dominated by imitators rather than innovators, and with this record Shudder to Think established themselves as one of the most unique bands of the decade, musically.
