Kathleen Edwards' 2005 album Back to Me was the sort of record that grows and reveals new secrets each time you gave it a listen, so it's tempting not to trust immediate impressions after three spins of her next set, 2008's Asking for Flowers. But if one has to leap to a relative snap judgment, Edwards' new record sounds just as strong as its fine predecessor, and shows that she is gaining strength and confidence as a songwriter, qualities she hardly lacked before.
Kathleen Edwards (born July 11, 1978) is a Canadian singer-songwriter and musician. Her 2003 debut album, Failer, contained the singles "Six O'Clock News" and "Hockey Skates". Her next two albums – Back to Me and Asking for Flowers – both made the Billboard 200 list and reached the top 10 of Billboard's Top Heatseekers chart. In 2012, Edwards' fourth studio album, Voyageur, became Edwards' first album to crack the top 100 and top 40 in the . peaking at on the .
On her third album, Kathleen Edwards is poised reach the larger audiences she deserves. More striking on this new release is her stronger vocal and lyrical prowess which makes it apparent that she’s in the zone of her craft. After proving her mettle on previous outings, she delivers with further conviction and confidence across songs suited for both quiet country roads and late night city bars. Truth be told, there is not a weak song on this album. The title track, "Asking for Flowers", about unrequited sacrifice made to sustain a relationship, is achingly plaintive. In "I Make the Dough, You Get the Glory", Edwards connects with everyone who has toiled mightily for scant appreciation. One is hard pressed to recount a more clever refrain than this: You're cool and cred like Foggerty, I'm Elvis Presley in the 70ths.
