Alexander Nevsky (Russian: Александр Невский) is the score composed by Sergei Prokofiev for Sergei Eisenstein's 1938 film Alexander Nevsky.
I suppose one could complain of a lack of personality in the interpretation, and there are a few opportunities that Schippers missed in which he could have pushed the tempo ahead, or exaggerated a sforzando to intensify the excitement, but a by-the-book playing of such an exciting piece is still exciting. The Mussorgsky/Ravel in particular is not as clear as one would expect from Sony's new DSD technology. Both works are surprisingly muddy in those quintessential hi-fi orchestral showpiece moments - I recall another CD where Schippers' Sibelius Sym 2 suffered similarly (whew, try saying that five times fast!).

Thomas Schippers conducts the New York Philharmonic in two Russian showpieces. Thomas Schippers had a sadly short career, but these recordings show his art at the best. The Nevsky is from 1962, while the Pictures is from 1965. The sources are not entirely clear, but both were likely 3-track recordings, and both have been redone in surround for this release. Tracklist: 01. Prokofiev: Alexander Nevsky, Op. 78 - I. Russia under the Mongolian Yoke 02.
