Debut album Grand Magus hit on November 5, 2001, via Rise Above Records (who would release the band's first four albums). This album continues to contribute to the band's cult status with doom and heavy metal fans today. December, 2009 saw the announcement that Roadrunner Records were to release Grand Magus' fifth album Hammer of the North in the Summer of 2010. Released June 21, 2010, Hammer of the North became a huge breakthrough within the band's history, triumphing in the Soundchecks of both German Hard Rock and Metal Hammer magazines. Further, the effort ascended to on the German album chart leading to a support slot on the joint tour of legends Mötorhead and Doro.

Their newest album, "Hammer Of The North" is a collection of songs that abounds with entirely fresh, seductive hooks. It also showcases the band's complete departure from their doom metal roots making a strong case for rock-solid songwriting prominent here more than on the group's previous outings. This is chiefly apparent in the second half of the album when Grand Magus tend to emulate their previous ideas to the point when the songs begin to blend together seamlessly. One or two mellower, more varied tracks would certainly solve this problem. The only notable composition that does so in a way is "The Lord Of Lies" with its atmospheric beginning.

Now that I have the anxiously awaited follow up in the form of their fifth album, Hammer of the North, my fears of being let down seem silly, because once again Grand Magus shows that they know how to craft top quality traditional heavy metal songs with a slight doom tinged edge

Grand Magus, formed in 1996 in Stockholm, Sweden, are led by Janne Christofferson (better known as JB), who also fronted the mighty Spiritual Beggars. While the Beggars are more in the traditional Deep Purple/Mountain camp of early rock/metal, Grand Magus originally opted for a bluesy, stoner-laced doom vibe, heavy on the early Black Sabbath riffing and tempos, with JB's gruff, forceful vocals blending perfectly with the music.
