The first volume of Running The Voodoo Down focused on funk and p-funk. The second disc has a wider ambit which includes more down-the-line jazz content, from Coltrane, Zawinul, Sonny Sharrock, Sarah Webster Fabio and Bob Thiele Emergency. It also digs deeper, and some listeners-even those who were tuned in back in the day-are sure to find one or two items which are new to them. The album opens with the earliest and best known track, "Acknowledgement" from Coltrane's A Love Supreme (Impulse!, 1965). Do we really need to hear it again here? Maybe not, but it sets the scene. Running The Voodoo Down - z 1967-77 was carefully assembled by Dean Rudland and Tony Harlow. This was psychedelic music, liked by rock fans and the counterculture, but grounded deeply in jazz and constantly referencing the fact in its lyrics.

Whilst not a lot of this music was commercially successful at the time, its importance and its influence on subsequent generations of artists – both black and white – has continued to grow over the years

Summary: The two-disc compilation of tracks from artists such as Miles Davis, Funkadelic, The Isley Brothers, Keith Jarrett, Santana, and Sly & the Family Stone that included influences from psych, rock, funk, soul and jazz music from between 1967 and 1980. It’s a beautifully compiled set that shows what was really going on in 1967 and how subsequent years translated the aftershock. The guitars rock like a motherfucker throughout.
