The Rite of Spring is an album by flautist Hubert Laws released on the CTI label featuring jazz interpretations of classical music compositions.

Stravinsky’s earthy, violent music was scandalous for its disregard of accepted ballet forms and its seeming refusal to adhere to any kind of tradition. From the groaning cellos to the aggressive percussion, The Rite of Spring did not contain the kind of music or structures that would have been expected. Indeed, by the time the first part of the ballet was over, the police had already arrived and were making efforts to quell the riot among the outraged audience.

The Rite of Spring, original French title, Le sacre du printemps, is a 1913 ballet with music by the Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. After the premiere the writer Leon Vallas opined that Stravinsky had written music 30 years ahead of its time, suitable to be heard in 1940. Coincidentally, it was in that year that Walt Disney released Fantasia, an animated feature film based on music from The Rite.
