Mercury is a song featured on The Prayer Chain's album Mercury. It's working title was Tasty Treat. Producer Steve Hindalong met up with the band in the lead-up to the recording sessions for the album Mercury to hear their material & develop it. Mercury was a new song that popped up in these sessions. The prominent bassline came about when Hindalong assertively told bassist Eric Campuzano to "play a f cking melody".

The Prayer Chain was THE seminal underground Christian band in the mid-90’s. During the overhaul in Christian music scene at the time, the larger labels were snatching up young alternative bands, hoping to cash in on the trend. One of those bands was The Prayer Chain. From their inception they had cultivated a sound that was unlike anything in Christian or secular music. Their first album spawned a minor single Crawl on the Christian radio channels. As they had began the sessions on their second album, which was Mercury, their label was not happy with the direction they were headed. Unfortunately, no matter how pathetic it may seem, Christian labels were trying to cultivate ‘alternatives’ to the secular world. For every Nirvana, they wanted a ‘Christian’ Nirvana to sell. The Prayer Chain’s first album, more or less, fit into the grunge category fairly easily. However, that sound was gone, entirely.

Labeling it a "Christian" album is a hard task as it does little to provide answers or direction towards following Christ. However, it does succeed on many levels to admit man's weakness and insecurities. This is the part that I enjoy the most about the album. It provides company to your misery in a sense. I find this strangely comforting. Probably the most admirable point of the entire album (and where it succeeds the most) is the time and space it creates, somewhat reminiscent of Pink Floyd's earlier albums (Meddle, et. You'll find points in the album where there.

The Mercury Prize, formerly called the Mercury Music Prize, is an annual music prize awarded for the best album released in the United Kingdom by a British or Irish act. It was established by the British Phonographic Industry and British Association of Record Dealers in 1992 as an alternative to the Brit Awards. The prize was originally sponsored by Mercury Communications, a brand owned by Cable & Wireless, from which the prize gets its name.

You've pushed me all around And now I've had my fill There's nothing left for me to say I've lost all countenance, you've gone too far. I'm bitter as the grass And I can't spit it out I like the taste of bitterness, so, so crass I've lost all countenance, you've gone too far. Crack the crickets cackle It's crawling up my spine Spit on its head To see the sunshine - give me a while, and I'll show you how it feels

In April of 1995, Rode Dog Records released the album 'Mercury' on compact disc and cassette. As an artistic band, this album was our crowning achievement. As people who grew up listening to music on vinyl, however, it was somewhat disappointing to never have a vinyl version of it. We intend to press a vinyl version of the album ourselves, now, on its 20th anniversary. It is more cost-prohibitive than we expected, especially since the album is so long that it needs to be spread across two discs (ah, the CD era of lengthy songs!). So, we are asking for contributors
