All ten songs on The Affectionate Punch are nearly swollen with ambition and swagger, yet those attributes are confronted with high levels of anxiety and confusion, the sound of prowess and hormones converging head-on. It's not always pretty, but it's unflaggingly sensational, even when it slows down. Having debuted with a brazen reduction of David Bowie's "Boys Keep Swinging" to a spindly rumble, t Alan Rankine and vocalist Billy Mackenzie ensured instant attention and set forward with this, their first album.

THE AFFECTIONATE PUNCH – ASSOCIATES (1980) A quote which encapsulates the magic of Associates appeared in the music press in the early ’80s but is now, regrettably, like so much else, being misquoted online. Associates are originals. It’s only on the remastered and partially re-recorded version of the album, which appeared in 1982, that it’s properly identifiable as Scotland’s national cacophony, and then only in a mirth-makingly brief squirt which polishes it off where the original faded. Nevertheless, it stands alongside Tom Waits’ Town With No Cheer and, well, Blue Aeroplanes’ Bagpipe Music as the finest us of the pipes in will. Alan Rankine on ‘The Affectionate Punch’. Associates were arguably the first band to emerge from Linlithgow/Dundee! To what extent, if any, did your hometowns shape your music?

The Associates debut LP The Affectionate Punch further cemented their growing reputation as sometimes startling, often enthralling innovators who recognised no musical rules. The booklet features liner notes by Billy MacKenzie biographer Tom Doyle, reproductions of original promotional material and memorabilia, and previously unpublished photos. These records (Fourth Drawer Down, The Affectionate Punch, Sulk) remain an Olympian achievemen. .

The Associates were one of the best bands ever and it seems ludicrous how underrated they are today. The late Billy MacKenzie had a voice to die for and multi-instrumentalist Alan Rankine is a supremely gifted musician and a perfect partner in crime for MacKenzie’s early eccentricities. This is their debut album from 1980 and is an amazing wealth of operatic swoops, jagged guitars, distantly stringy synths and bouncing basslines, as exemplified with the frantic pulse of “Amused As Always” with its intense needling guitar solo and backing vocals from none other than Cure frontman Robert Smith.I also love the glistening, reverbed guitar washes of “Logan Time” with a delicious soaring vocal from Billy and the enigmatic “Transport To Central” which is cloaked in grinding guitar spirals, ponderous drum and bass and steam train feedback squeals.Side Two fires up with the dislocation dance of “A Matter Of Gender” with outrageous vocal ululations from Billy and lashings of lyrical bass lines and trebly guitar shards. My absolute favourite is next. “Even Dogs In The Wild” saunters in on a mock waltz beat with a deep crooning delivery from Billy before launching into a chorus of massed trumpeting guitars and sizzling cymbal crashes; it’s absolutely delectable. Finally, after the effervescent pop jangle of “Would I Bounce Back” and the throbbing torch song “Deeply Concerned”, this intense, unique album ends with the excitable rush of the multi octaved Billy singing the alphabet!
