On June 1, 1974, several leaders on the British underground rock scene - Soft Machine bassist Kevin Ayers, John Cale, Brian Eno and Nico - joined forces for one memorable evening at the Rainbow Theatre in London. Thankfully, the show was recorded for the rest of the world to enjoy as well. Eno was a founding member of Roxy Music, and though he left after their second album in 1973, his influence has never left the group. Eno went solo, issuing two of the 1974's most eclectic and exciting albums, 'Here Come the Warm Jets' and 'Taking Tiger Mountain by Strategy.
Both Cale and Nico make strong marks with two of their most notable and notorious cover versions. The former's "Heartbreak Hotel" keeps much of the spaced-out paranoia familiar from the studio cut, just ominous enough. Meanwhile, Nico's take on "The End" easily equals her own studio take, the song creeping with dread and fear. Ayers' selections take up the remainder of the album and they're, well, nice.
June 1, 1974 was originally released by Island Records the same year in which it was recorded. Brian Eno performs two songs from his debut solo album Here Come the Warm Jets (1973), while former Velvet.

Crawdaddy said the album was "in many ways a patchwork of past. His motif, as defined on Paris 1919, remains clean, compact, clever melodies, written and produced with a clear understanding of the subtle nuances of mood the simplest of chord structures and breaks can evoke. But the extravagant orchestration which characterized the last solo album has been largely abandoned in favor of a sparser, more barren sound, with just the barest backing essentials augmenting Cale's vocals. Mick Gold said: "Cale has the voice of a chameleon . June 1, 1974 (with Kevin Ayers, Brian Eno and Nico).
