With bassist Archie Leggett and drummer Eddie Sparrow at the hub, Ayers selected guest artists for a handful of the tracks: Whole World colleague Dave Bedford ("Beware of the Dog"), Gong's new guitarist Steve Hillage ("Shouting in a Bucket Blues"), and former Soft Machine mates Robert Wyatt ("Hymn") and Mike.

Kevin Ayers is the epitome by what they mean by "cult" artist. If Nick Drake dropped some of Syd Barrett's left over acid, it might come close to describing this eccentrically playful and restlessly experimental raconteur. From his smoky, deep voice to his obsession with bananas, the dearly departed Mr. Ayers was a mercurial talent. Wot A Dream 8. Hymn 9. Kevin Ayers has died. A major player in the psychedelic and Canterbury scenes and a co-founder of The Soft Machine, he worked with Messrs. Wyatt, Eno, Cale, Oldfield and Barrett. Aside from his many collaborations, he released a rich series of solo albums. This track (just under 1:20) from his Bananamour album epitomizes everything that made Ayers’ solo work great: his heavy-lidded and sultry voice, his epic orchestrations, his heavy doses of humor, and his reflections on how indulgence and impairment can lead to spiritual experiences: I said I feel really happy.
