Over the course of her career, Juliana Barwick has perfected a very particular form of ethereal vocal ambience. For her new album, she recorded in Iceland with Sigur Rós collaborator Alex Somers, members of múm, and the string quartet Amiina, resulting in her most emotionally complex work yet.
Experimental artist Julianna Barwick release her third album, Nepenthe, on August 20th via Dead Oceans. The follow-up to 2011′s The Magic Place and last year’s OMBRE project with Helado Negro was recorded in Reykjavik, Iceland and produced by musician Alex Somers (Sigur Rós, Jónsi).

Her music finds its motor in significant events in her own life, but they are abstracted into a sense of sonic wonderment, a radiance that you could say is her signature sound
Julianna Barwick's Nepenthe is stunning. It is an album that seems interested in beauty's potential to alleviate depression. Barwick's compositions are sparse and icy, slowly building into an emotional avalanche that is unbridled by anxiety or fear. These songs overwhelm the senses. They invite the listener to look inward, to lose yourself in a beautiful wave of ambient bliss. There are a few moments on this album that are absolutely breathtaking. A perfect example of this for me is in the. Julianna Barwick shows the power that vocals can have and explores the dynamic acoustics of them in extreme depth on Nepenthe (Hey, depth, Nepenthe, those kind of rhyme! No? Ok I'll let myself out).
Brooklyn-based experimental musician Julianna Barwick works primarily with layers of her own voice, which are looped and processed into rich soundscapes. 2011's debut album, 'The Magic Place', hinted at the kind of beautiful emptiness you might find traversing across middle America (Barwick was raised in Missouri), but 'Nepenthe' latches onto the same sense of drowned urbanity that William Basinski explored in his 'Disintegration Loops'.
The importance of place in Julianna Barwick's music cannot be overstated; both the feelings and emotions we are capable of projecting onto our surroundings, and the memories and moods that our surroundings are, in turn, capable of evoking within us. 2011's The Magic Place made this explicit. Nepenthe marks a series of firsts for the Brooklyn artist. A handful of collaborations aside, it is her first album to be created with other musicians, and her first release on Dead Oceans. Following an invitation from Sigur Rós producer and affiliate Alex Somers, it is also her first to be recorded outside the confines of New York, instead taking shape in Somers' Reykjavík studio earlier this year, where string ensemble amiina, múm guitarist Róbert Sturla Reynisson and a teenage female choir all lent their hand.
